This ranking of graduate psychology programs is determined by the results of a survey that covered all doctoral programs in psychology in American institutions of higher learning, except for those programs whose primary purpose is to prepare students to become licensed practitioners in the field. The ranking list above includes psychology programs that award the Psy.D. degree as well as those that award the Ph.D. degree. Since some schools have multiple independent programs housed in various institutional units, the survey, and the ranking determined from its results, include multiple listings for some universities. Unless a program listing explicitly states otherwise, the psychology program referred to in the ranking list above is located in the department of psychology.

Programs in clinical psychology were evaluated in a separate survey.
